The School Admissions Code
The School Admissions Code requires all schools to annually determine admission arrangements that clearly set out how children will be admitted, including the school’s Published Admissions Number (PAN) and over-subscription criteria.
Academies, Voluntary Aided, Foundation, Free and UTC schools are legally required to hold a public consultation on their admission arrangements at least once every 7 years, even if there have been no changes during that period.
A public consultation must also be held where a school wishes to make changes to their admission arrangements to allow interested parties to respond to proposals.
Consultations must last for a minimum of 6 weeks and must take place between 1 October 2023 and 31 January 2024 for entry to school in September 2025. This means the deadline for starting a consultation is 20 December 2023 to allow the necessary time for it to run for 6 weeks before 31 January 2024. You should avoid starting and ending consultations on a weekend.
